Manor Lords

The most beautiful medieval town builder ever made, and about sixty percent of a game.

Placing the first road in Manor Lords is one of the best moments this genre has produced. It curves. Buildings snap to it organically, plots subdivide behind them the way real medieval towns grew, and within twenty minutes you have a village that looks like it was found rather than designed. Nothing else in city building looks like this.

The simulation underneath is real

Beneath the beauty is a genuinely detailed supply chain. Families occupy burgage plots, plots have back gardens that can become vegetable patches or goat sheds, and every good passes through a chain of hands you can trace. Fuel shortages in winter are a real failure state and I lost my first settlement to one.

The regional trade and land ownership layers are also more thoughtful than most of this genre's economies. Wealth accumulates in specific places and moving it costs time.

The missing half

It is in early access and the review says so plainly. What is missing is the endgame: combat is functional but shallow, the AI baron does very little, and once your town is stable there is no external pressure to respond to. My longest settlement reached a point where I was simply watching a well-run village and there was nothing left to want.

The battles in particular need work. Formations exist, morale exists, and the fights still resolve into two blobs pushing.

Where it slips

Performance degrades noticeably past about 700 population, which is a hard ceiling in a genre about growth. Several systems — tithes, influence, the trade route economics — are undocumented and I learned them from the community rather than the game.

The verdict

Fifty-five hours out of something unfinished, which is a real recommendation and a real warning. What is here is exceptional and it stops before it concludes.

Buy it if watching a town grow is enough. Wait if you want a game with an ending.

Accessibility

  • UI scaling available and genuinely useful at 4K
  • Full pause; nothing requires real-time reaction
  • Tutorial is thin and several systems are undocumented
